I got my first taste of landscaping while helping my Dad as a young man. While not a popular notion with today’s youth, he was of the persuasion that I should probably be paying him for the invaluable experience, not the other way around. After all, he was saving me the cost of a gym membership, with all the heavy stones I was lifting.

He had very high expectations of me, a perfectionist. He continually promoted a strong work ethic and instilled the belief that if a job was worth doing at all, it was worth doing well. He’d wake me at 6:00 am, we’d put in a hard day, then enjoy a few hours rebuilding our classic sailboat when the work was done.

I started my first business venture in high school. Not surprisingly, in lawn maintenance. I would push Dad’s lawn mower, gas can and electric trimmer up steep hills, then cut my customers’ lawns. I liked the money, of course, but there was something more. I discovered the pride and satisfaction that only comes from a job well done.

I enrolled in a nine month landscape program at Capilano College. Part of our curriculum included practical experience at Park & Tilford Gardens in North Vancouver, under the supervision of Suzanne Wilkinson. I created the White Garden as a project. It was very satisfying, I received many accolades and excellent grades. The hands on experience was priceless. I had the opportunity, thereafter, to follow up my experience with a two year stint with a prominent landscape firm.

Not everyone feels a calling in life, but I had found my place in this world. I began saving for my first truck and collecting the tools I would need to be a garden and landscape professional. O’Grady’s Garden & Landscape was established in 1988.

My passion and pride are reflected in everything I do. I believe there’s considerable value in the client relationships I’ve cultivated and maintained over the years; something the employed crews of larger companies will never match. And that proprietorship, pride of ownership, and very personalized care are valued by owners that really treasure their properties.
